विलायत (प्रशासनिक विभाग)

प्रशासनिक विभाजन लगभग एक राज्य या प्रांत की तरह।

विलायत (फ़ारसी:ولایت), विलायाह (अरबी: ولاية‎‎) या विलोयती (उज़बेक: вилояти) अरब और मध्य एशिया के देशों में प्रान्त या ज़िले के स्तर के प्रशासनिक विभाग को कहते हैं। यह अरबी भाषा के 'वली' (والي‎) शब्द से लिया गया है जिसका अर्थ है 'देखरेख या प्रशासन करने वाला'।[1]

हिन्दी में समय के साथ 'विलायत' शब्द का अर्थ 'राज्य' से बदलकर 'विदेश' होया गया और 'विलायती' का अर्थ 'परदेसी' या 'विदेशी' हो गया। कुछ क्षेत्रों की हिन्दी उपभाषाओं में 'व' की जगह 'ब' बोला जाता है और ब्रिटिश राज के आरम्भिक भाग में वहाँ अंग्रेज़ों को 'बिलायती' बोला जाने लगा। ब्रिटिश लोगों ने भी अनौपचारिक रूप से ब्रिटेन को 'ब्लाईटी' (Blighty) और ब्रिटिश लोगों को 'ब्लाईटर' (Blighter) बोलना शुरू कर दिया। आज भी बूढ़े ब्रिटिश लोग कभी-कभी अपने देश को 'ओल्ड ब्लाईटी' (Old Blighty) कहते हैं।[2][3]
