The first championship in the United States was created in 1881 and held in August in Newport, where it was played until 1918. The challenge round was abolished in 1911. Only members of clubs affiliated to the American Federation were allowed to take part. The women's singles was first played in 1887, in Philadelphia. In 1919, the men's and women's tournaments moved to Forest Hill West Side Tennis Club in New York. The competition was played on grass until 1974, then on clay between 1975 and 1977. In 1970, the competition became open, and it was also the first major tournament to adopt the tie-break.

The US Open moved for the final time in 1978, with the Flushing Meadows stadium, in the Queens district of New York, having the honour of hosting the fourth and final Grand Slam event of the year since then. The clay courts have been replaced by Decoturf hard court surfaces.

The US Open has the largest centre court in the world, with room for 23,000 spectators in the Arthur Ashe Stadium, opened in 1997. In 1999, the old centre court was renovated and renamed the Louis Armstrong Stadium.
