'''वुलर​ झील''' [[जम्मू व कश्मीर]] राज्य के बांडीपोरा ज़िले में स्थित एक झील है। यह [[भारत]] की मीठे पानी की सबसे बड़ी झील है। यह [[झेलम नदी]] के मार्ग में आती है और झेलम इसमें पानी डालती भी है और फिर आगे निकाल भी लेती है। मौसम के अनुसार इस झील के आकार में बहुत विस्तार-सिकोड़ होता रहता है - इसका अकार ३० वर्ग किमी से २६० वर्ग किमी के बीच बदलता है। अपने बड़े अकार के कारण इस झील में बड़ी लहरें आती हैं।

 

प्राचीनकाल में 'महापद्म देवता' इस झील के [[अधिदेवता]] थे और उनके नाम पर इस झील को 'महापद्मसर' कहा जाता था। झील का अकार बड़ा होने से यहाँ दोपहर में बड़ी लहरें उठती हैं जिस से इसकी शांत सतह पर देखते-ही-देखते ऊँची और ख़तरनाक लहरे उठने लगती हैं। संस्कृत में इन कूदती हुई लहरों को 'उल्लल' कहा जाता है और यही नाम विकृत होकर 'वुलर' पड़ गया।<ref name="ref56mozib">[http://books.google.com/books?id=a-RGAAAAYAAJ Ramsar Sites of India: Wular Lake, Jammu and Kashmir], World Wide Fund for Nature, India, 1994, ''... वुलर के पूर्वोत्तरी कोने में ज़ैनुल लंक नामक एक द्वीप है ('लंक' [[कश्मीरी भाषा]] में 'द्वीप' के लिए शब्द है)। यह एक कृत्रिम द्वीप है जो सन् १४४४ में कश्मीर के सुलतान [[ज़ैन-उल-अबदीन]]​ ने बनवाया था। वे अपनी धार्मिक सहनशीलता के लिए जाने जाते थे और उन्हें [[हिन्दू]] व [[मुस्लिम]] [[कश्मीरी|कश्मीरी लोग]] इज़्ज़त से '[[बुड शाह]]' (यानि बड़े शाह या महान शाह) के नाम से याद करते हैं। १५वीं सदी के कश्मीरी इतिहासकार [[जोनराज]] के अनुसार यह द्वीप बुड शाह ने नाविकों को वुलर में तूफ़ानी स्थितियों में आश्रय देने के लिए बनवाया था। इसपर अभी भी खँडहर मौजूद हैं। जिस काल में उन्होंने यह द्वीप बनवाया था उस समय वुलर थोड़ी अधिक बड़ी थी और टापू झील के बीच में था। धीरे-धीरे वुलर एक तरफ़ से सूखकर सिकुड़ गई और द्वीप अब उसके एक कोने में है।<ref name="ref80yedop">[http://books.google.com/books?id=chHZSuf1i98C The valley of Kashmir], Sir Walter Roper Lawrence, pp. 20, H.
