रोमानी यूरोप के बंजारों (रोमा लोग, जिनको अंग्रेज़ी में जिप्सी भी कहा जाता है) द्वारा बोली जाती है। ये भारी मात्रा में अन्य यूरोपीय भाषाओं से मिश्रित है।
रोमानी भाषा के विश्लेषण से पता चला है कि यह मध्य और उत्तरी भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप में बोली जाने वाली भाषाओँ से संबंधित है|इस भाषाई संबंध को रोमानी लोगों के भौगोलिक मूल का संकेत माना जाता है|वे मूल रूप से भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप के या अब के उत्तरी भारत और पाकिस्तान के कुछ हिस्सों आए थे| रोमानी भाषा को आमतौर पर मध्य हिन्द-आर्य भाषाओं में शामिल किया जाता है|रोमानी भाषा कभी कभी बोलियों के एक समूह या संबंधित भाषाओं का एक संग्रह, जिसमे एक आनुवंशिक उपसमूह के सभी सदस्य शामिल हैं, माना जाता है|
रोमानी भाषा किसी भी राष्ट्र की अधिकारिक भाषा नहीं है, पर कई देशों में इसे अल्पसंख्यक भाषा का दर्जा दिया जाता है|वे देश जिनमें रोमानी जनसँख्या अधिक है, वहां अब रोमानी भाषा की विभिन्न बोलियाँ संहिताबद्ध की जाने की प्रक्रिया में
