S.M. Krishna is the son of S.C. Mallaiah. He completed his Bachelor's in Arts from Maharaja's College, Mysore and obtained a Law degree from Government Law College, Bangalore. Krishna studied in the United States, graduating from the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas and George Washington University, Washington D.C, where he was a Fulbright Scholar and later in the faculty he took up teaching International Law. His active interest in politics started in the USA where he was part of John F Kennedy's presidential campaign. Soon after his return from the United States he got elected to the Karnataka legislative assembly in the year 1962.

He was married to Prema on April 29, 1964 and has two daughters. Krishna is an avid sportsperson and plays tennis regularly.

In addition, Krishna has served multiple terms as an MP from the Mandya district of Karnataka starting from 1968 in the 4th, 5th , 7th and 8th Lok Sabha. He served as minister under Mrs. Indira Gandhi between 1983-84 and Rajiv Gandhi between 1984-85 as minister of state for industry and finance respectively. He was member of the the Rajya Sabha in the years 1996 and 2006. He was member of the Karnataka legislative assembly and council at different times. Between 1989-1992 he was speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka. In the year 1999 as KPCC president he lead his party to victory in the assembly polls and took over as Chief Minister of Karnataka, the post he held till 2004 He is often credited as the father of modern Bangalore by making it the IT capital of South Asia. He was also instrumental in creating power reforms with ESCOMS. He encouraged private public participation and was a fore bearer of Bangalore Advance Task Force.

Krishna resigned as Governor of Maharastra on March 5, 2008. It was reported that this was due to his intention to return to active politics in Karnataka.[1] President Pratibha Patil accepted his resignation on March 6.[2] Krishna took oath as Union Cabinet Minister on May 22, 2009. He will be the External Affairs Minister in the Manamohan Singh-led cabinet. He is probably the only minister in the Dr. Manmohan Singh's current cabinet who has holistic experience in all political forums: Minister, Dy CM,CM, Governor and Union Minister thrice.
