Jains are remarkably welcoming and friendly toward other faiths. Several non-Jain temples in India are administered by Jains. The Jain Heggade family has run the Hindu institutions of Dharmasthala, including the Sri Manjunath Temple, for eight centuries. Jains willingly donate money to churches and mosques and usually help with interfaith functions. Jain monks, like Acharya Tulsi and Acharya Sushil Kumar, actively promoted harmony among rival faiths to defuse tension.
Jains have been a palpable presence in Indian culture, contributing to Indian philosophy, art, architecture, sciences, and to Mohandas Gandhi's politics, which led to the mainly non-violent movement for Indian independence.लगभग ३०० ईसा पूर्व में मगध में १२ वर्षों का भीषण अकाल पड़ा, जिसके कारण भद्रभाहुु अपने शिष्यों सहित कर्नाटक चले गए। किंतु कुछ अनुयायी स्थूलभद्र के साथ मगध में ही रूक गए। भद्रबाहु के वापस लौटने पर मगध के साधुओं से उनका गहरा मतभेद हो गया जिसके परिणामस्वरूप जैन मत श्वेताम्बर एवं दिगम्बर नामक दो सम्प्रदायों में बट गया। स्थूलभद्र के शिष्य श्वेताम्बर (श्वेत वस्त्र धारण करने वाले) एवं भद्रबाहू के शिष्य दिगम्बर (नग्न रहने वाले) कहलाए।
