प्राचीन ग्रंथों में इन्हें "सुनहरे" या "पीले" रंग का बुलाया गया है। इनका ज़िक्र अक्सर निषाद और [[पुलिंद]] जातियों के साथ किया जाता था, लेकिन निषादों का रंग सांवला या काला बताया गया है। "योग वशिष्ठ" ग्रन्थ में [[राम|श्री रामचंद्र]] जंगल में किरातों द्वारा फैलाए गए जाल के बारे में बात कहते हैं, जिस से यह संकेत मिलता है कि प्राचीन युग में शायद किरातों को एक शिकार करने वाले समुदाय के रूप में देखा जाता हो।
