हिन्दु कुश पर्वतों को [[संस्कृत भाषा|संस्कृत]] में 'पारियात्र पर्वत' बुलाया जाता था। जब इस इलाक़े में [[सिकंदर|सिकंदर महान]] की जीत हुई तो इन पर्वतों को [[यूनानी भाषा]] में 'कौकासोश इन्दिकौश' (Καύκασος Ινδικός, Caucasus Indicus) यानि 'भारतीय पर्वत' बुलाया जाने लगा।<ref name="ref20mulox">[http://books.google.com/books?id=eUxGAAAAYAAJ Sources of history in the Pentateuch], Samuel Colcord Bartlett, A.D.F. So the clearer and obscurer expressions, Kash and Kush are interchanged with each other, a fact which can be confirmed by those Indoscythian ...''</ref> बाद में इनका नाम 'हिन्दु कुश', 'हिन्दु कुह' और 'कुह-ए-हिन्दु' पड़ा। 'कुह' या 'कोह' का मतलब तो [[फ़ारसी भाषा|फ़ारसी]] में 'पहाड़' होता है लेकिन 'कुश' के मतलब को लेकर विवाद है। सन् १३३३ ईसवी में [[इब्न-बतूता|इब्न बतूता]] के अनुसार इसका मतलब 'मारने वाला' था। इसका तात्पर्य यह निकाला गया कि उत्तरी [[भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप]] पर अरबों-तुर्कों के क़ब्ज़े के बाद हिन्दुओं को ग़ुलाम बनाकर इन पर्वतों से ले जाया जाता था और उनमें से बहुत यहाँ बर्फ़ में मर जाया करते थे। इसके विपरीत कुछ विद्वानों के अनुसार 'कुश' केवल 'कुह' का एक और रूप है, या फिर 'हिन्दु कश' या 'हिन्दु केश' का बिगड़ा रूप है, जिसका मतलब 'भारत की सीमा' निकलता है।<ref name="ref15xojaj">[http://books.google.com/books?id=9kfJ6MlMsJQC The Afghans] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130622160447/http://books.google.com/books?id=9kfJ6MlMsJQC |date=22 जून 2013 }}, Willem Vogelsang, Wiley-Blackwell, 2002, ISBN 978-0-631-19841-3, ''...
