भारत के ब्रिटिश शासकों ने 1920 के दशक में पंजाब के अहीरों को एक "कृषिक जाति" के रूप में वर्गीकृत किया था, जो उस समय "[[योद्धा जातियाँ]]" होने का पर्याय था। वे 1898 से सेना में भर्ती हुए थे। [[अलवर]], [[रेवाड़ी]], [[नारनौल]], [[महेंद्रगढ़]], [[गुड़गांव]] और [[झज्जर]] के आसपास के क्षेत्र में उनकी महत्वपूर्ण आबादी है। इस क्षेत्र को अहीरवाल के रूप में जाना जाता है।
