शिबू का जन्म पुराने [[बिहार]] के [[हजारीबाग]] जिले में नामरा गाँव में हुआ था । उनकी स्कूली शिक्षा भी यहीं हुई। स्कूली शिक्षा समाप्त करने के बाद ही उनका विवाह हो गया और उन्होंने पिता को खेती के काम में मदद करने का निर्णय लिया। उनके राजनैतिक जीवन की शुरुआत [[1970]] में हुई। उन्होंने [[23 जनवरी]], [[1975]] को उन्होंने तथाकथित रूप से [[जामताड़ा]] जिले के चिरूडीह गाँव में "बाहरी" लोगों ([[आदिवासी]] जिन्हें "दिकू" नाम से बुलाते हैं) को खदेड़ने के लिये एक हिंसक भीड़ का नेतृत्व किया था । इस घटना में 11 लोग मारे गये थे। उन्हें 68 अन्य लोगों के साथ हत्या का अभियुक्त बनाया गया।
He was born in Nemra village of Hazaribagh district in [[Bihar]]. He completed his schooling from the same district. After schooling, he got married and decided to work with his father who was a farmer. He started his political career in the early [[1970s]]. He became a tribal leader. On [[January 23]], [[1975]], he allegedly led a mob that attacked the [[Muslim]]-dominated Chirudih village in Jamtara district in a campaign to drive away "outsiders", a term used to describe non-tribals. Ten people including nine Muslims were killed in the attack. He was charged with 68 others for murder. He lost his first Lok Sabha election in [[1977]]. He was first elected to the [[Lok Sabha]] in [[1980]]. In [[1986]], an arrest warrant was issued against him. He was subsequently elected to the Lok Sabha in [[1989]], [[1991]] and [[1996]] as well. In [[2002]], he was elected to the [[Rajya Sabha]] with the help of the [[Bharatiya Janata Party]]. He won the Dumka Lok Sabha seat in a by-election the same year and resigned his Rajya Sabha seat. He was re-elected in 2004.
शिबू पहली बार [[1977]] में [[लोकसभा]] के लिये चुनाव में खड़े हुये लेकिन उन्हें पराजय का मुँह देखना पड़ा। उनका यह सपना [[1986]] में पूरा हुआ । इसके बाद क्रमश: [[1986]], [[1989]], [[1991]], [[1996]] में भी चुनाव जीते । [[2002]] वे [[भारतीय जनता पार्टी |भाजपा]] की सहायता से [[राज्यसभा]] के लिये चुने गये। [[2004]] में वे [[दुमका]] से [[लोकसभा]] के लिये चुने गये और [[राज्यसभा]] की सीट से त्यागपत्र दे दिया।
He has three sons and a daughter.
सन [[2005]] में [[झारखंड]] [[झारखंड विधान सभा| विधानसभा]] चुनावों के पश्चात वे विवादस्पद तरीक़े से [[झारखंड]] के मुख्यमंत्री बने।
