Option Nepal–An Overview

Nepal is an under developed country. People here especially in rural areas are deprived of their basic human rights. Dalits in Nepal are historically victimized disadvantaged community who have been compelled to live the lowest standard of lives. Seeing the critical conditions of people, Mr. B.P. Lohani felt sudden need of certain organization which further strengthens the activities of dalit groups and helps them step forward for their own rights. So, this organization was founded as “Option Nepal” which provides thousands of various options to put an end to various human rights violations. Therefore, to support all these groups of people Option Nepal came to light by indigenous professionals to engage protection on human rights and humanitarian issues and developments.

Option Nepal is a non-political, non-profit making, independent and democratic social human rights organization initiated and established in 2010 B.S. by senior human rights defenders, lawyers, educationists, peace educators, sociologist and researchers. It has been giving its full efforts in protecting and promoting the global ideals and values of human rights, democracy, peace and education in Nepal.

There were many challenges to face as ON worked to change the age-old social norms, culture, customs and values, but it has been able to achieve significant success for the rights of Dalits through advocacy from the grassroots up to the policy level. It was a great challenge to revolt against the religious and cultural practices. It offered various counseling and advocacy, and awareness programs which gradually sank in and communities started one by one to accept it. It has reunited various people from diverse and opposing backgrounds, who are now united as a committed “Option team members” working together for a just, equitable and peaceful society. To ensure the increased representation of Dalit and marginalized people at all decision-making levels, ON has undertaken the task of building the capacity of members at the local level, with the mission of providing leadership training, and education about participation in the development process of Nepal. ON continues to involve in lobbying to change discriminatory laws and policies against poor Dalits so that human rights justice prevails.

Option Nepal has presented people with many new challenges and opportunities. Option Nepal has provided marginalized people employment opportunities through various handicraft and husbandry programs. It has provided clothes and blanket distribution to the needy people. It has also provided women, children and youths with various facilitator programs. Option Nepal has never missed its opportunities wherever it could provide services. It has been and will be always raising its voices participating in many service and training programs and thus created awareness on many existing social misbehaviors and is helping to make Nepal a peaceful nation to live in.

Vision:

Option Nepal envisages a country where all the disadvantaged people would experience societies free from violence, torture, exploitation and injustice.

Mission:

The mission of Option Nepal is to alleviate the suffering of individuals and families in the most rural areas through sustainable grassroots initiatives aimed at local empowerment, access to health services, and educational opportunities. It aims to fulfill basic human rights of the disadvantaged people.

Goal:

To alleviate all the evil social exploitation, repression, harassment and discrimination existing in Nepali society along with the protection and promotion of human rights. To increase the quality of life for disadvantaged and marginalized people.

Major Option’s Activities:

i)    Special programs for hill and madhesi dalits,

ii)   Relief programs,

iii)  Health camps,

iv)  Animal husbandry training,

v)    Self Employment training, and

vi)  Promotion of child and women participation

Aims and Objectives of the Organization:

Option Nepal is working towards achieving the following objectives for the benefit of its targeted groups of people.

»     To protect and promote human rights by making them fully enjoying their human rights.

»     To put an end to all kinds of racial, caste and religion based discrimination establishing healthy relationship between every human kind.

»     To alleviate social and economic exploitation empowering poor and dalit community people.

»     To alleviate political exclusion and establish proportional and inclusive representatives

»     To control global warming and establish balanced eco-system.

»     To organize speech programs to aware people about social hindrance and for the future generation for their unlawful and mistreatments to disadvantaged people.

Norms and Values:

»     By eradicating social discrimination only, we can establish peaceful environment.

»     Social awareness programs can only guarantee human rights for all.

»     With the end of social, religious and political exclusion, we can start a new just and equitable society.
