[[File:Bofors gun 155mm.jpg|thumb|left|बोफोर्स तोप]]कुछ समय के लिए, आज की तुलना में तोपखाना रेजिमेंट सेना के कर्मियों के काफी बड़े हिस्से की कमान संभालता था, जिनमें हवाई रक्षा तोपखाना और कुछ विमानन संपत्तियों का रख-रखाव भी सम्मलित थे। फिर 1990 के दशक में सेना के वायु रक्षा कोर के गठन किया गया और विमानन संपत्तियों को सेना के विमानन कॉर्प्स को हस्तान्तरित कर दिया गया। अब यह रेजिमेंट अपना ध्यान फील्ड आर्टिलरी पर केंद्रित करता है, और प्रत्येक परिचालन कमानो के लिए रेजिमेंट और बैटरी की आपूर्ति करता है। इस रेजिमेंट का मुख्यालय नाशिक, महाराष्ट्र में है, इसके साथ यहाँ एक संग्रहालय भी स्थित है। भारतीय सेना का तोपखाना स्कूल [[देवलाली]] में स्थित है।
