Hemanshu~hiwiki
Hi! I'm Hemanshu also at English Wikipedia. I would like to thank Jimbo and the Wikimedia foundation for this fantastic project which gives opportunity to make informational webpages so easily in English, Hindi and so many languages. Jimbo, you're cool. More power to you.
If you want to learn more about the Wikipedia concept, see the welcome page, Help page, Bolierplate text and Tips for Starting a New Language Wikipedia from English Wikipedia. Please do try to read those pages before you contribute.
In this page we try to explain how to resolve problems with viewing the pages in devanagari script and how to contribute to the Hindi Wikipedia.
Hindi Wikipedia uses Unicode to encode its pages. See Web in Indian Languages web page for more information about web pages in Unicode Hindi.
If you cannot see any devanagari letters, or if there are too many "spelling-mistakes," read the following:
For Microsoft Windows users:
The most probable reason why you cannot see anything on the Hindi Wikipedia is that you don't have a font which supports the Devanagari Unicode range. If you can see some letters, but there are too many errors, most probably you have a font with poor support for Devanagari Unicode.
Internet Explorer users:
If you were able to see some letters, you will need to switch the font Internet Explorer uses for showing Devanagari Unicode. To do this pull down Tools from the menubar in Internet Explorer and follow Internet Options..., click on Fonts. Choose Devanagari in Language script first, and choose Raghu8 font (from the BBC site) in the Web page font box. Restart Internet Explorer if it doesn't work the first time around.
Mozilla users:
It seems you need to turn on "Indic" support in Windows 2000. To do this, go to Control Panel in your computer, double click on Regional Options. In General Tab, language settings for the system, check the Indic box and click OK. You may need to restart the machine after doing this. In Windows XP, go to Control Panel in your computer, double click Regional and Language Options, select Languages Tab, under supplemental language support, check the box to install files for complex script and click OK. (Can somebody please confirm this?).
For users of Linux:
Devanagari renders properly on Linux by default with both Mozilla 1.4 and MozillaFirebird 0.6 (but there appear to be some "spelling mistakes" - the mathras appear over the wrong letters).
If you have more information, especially if you manage to view the devanagari page properly in Linux (esp. with Mozilla), don't hestitate to edit this section or leave a note on the "Discuss this page" page for this article.
If the pages render properly and you are interested in contributing to this project, read the following:
Please take a look at how to edit a page and the Welcome page from English Wikipedia for guidelines.
A few points to remember when adding material:
- Do register and always remember to login before adding material.
- Please try to add the Unicode encoded text without trying to correct the apparent "spelling mistakes". Most of these "mistakes" are due to problems with the font and script processor which we hope will be fixed in the near future.
In order to contribute to Hindi Wikipedia, you'll need to use either
(i) a transliteration software like [http://www.aczone.com/ITRANS/
ITRANS] which uses an intutive scheme to produce devanagari letters from
Hindi-typed-in-English text, or
(ii) a software which supports a devanagari keyboard (the usual keyboard in
which the keys are interpreted differently).
