निर्मला सीतारमनसीतारामन् 2003 से 2005 तक राष्ट्रीय महिला आयोग की सदस्या रह चुकी हैं। वे 03 सितंबर 2017 तक भारतीय जनता पार्टी की प्रवक्ता के साथ-साथ भारत की भारत की वाणिज्य और उद्योग (स्वतंत्र प्रभार) तथा वित्त व कारपोरेट मामलों की राज्य मंत्री रहीं हैं और 03 सितंबर 2017 को श्री नरेंद्र मोदी की सरकार में उन्हें रक्षा मंत्री बनाया गया। वे श्रीमती इंदिरा गाँधी के बाद भारत के रक्षा मंत्रालय की कमान सम्हालने वाली स्वतंत्र भारत की दूसरी महिला नेत्री और स्वतंत्र रूप से पहली पूर्णकालिक महिला रक्षामंत्री हैं।
