Talk pages consultation: Phase 2 starts! संपादित करें

 

The Wikimedia Foundation is currently conducting a global consultation about communication. The goal is to bring Wikimedians and wiki-minded people together to improve tools for communication.

Phase 1 of the consultation is over, thank you very much for your help on setting up that first phase. We've published the Phase 1 report. The report summarizes what we've learned, proposes a direction for the project, and asks specific questions to explore in Phase 2.

Very briefly, the proposed direction is that wikitext talk pages should be improved, and not replaced. We propose building a new design on top of talk pages that changes the page's default appearance, and offers key tools like replying, indenting and signing posts. To keep consistency with existing tools, the new design will be a default experience that existing users can opt out of. We also propose building features that experienced contributors want, including the ability to watchlist a single discussion, and the ability to move, archive and search for threads. Building these features may require some loss of flexibility, or small-to-medium changes in wikitext conventions. The goal is to only make changes that directly enable functionality that users really want.

You can see more information and discussion about the proposed direction in the Phase 1 report, including the results of new user tests and some of the quotations from Phase 1 discussions that led to this proposal.

Now it's time to start Phase 2!

We have six questions to discuss in Phase 2, asking for reactions to the proposed direction, and pros and cons for specific changes that we could make.

Can you help by hosting a discussion at your wiki? Here's what to do:

  1. First, sign up your group here.
  2. Next, create a page (or a section on a Village pump, a dedicated page, or an e-mail thread – whatever is natural for your group) to collect information from other people in your group.
  3. Then start the conversation with the six questions listed in the Questions for Phase 2 section of the report.
  4. Inform your community about the Phase 2. We will display a banner on the wikis when some communities will have setup their local consultation places.
  5. When the conversation is concluded, please write a summary of the discussion on the Phase 2 community discussion summaries page, and report what you learned from your group. Please include links if the discussion is available to the public. Community summaries for Phase 2 are due by June 15, 2019

  • कुछ दिनों के लिए अन्य विकिमीडिया विकियों पर कॉमन्स से फ़ाइलों के लिए फ़ाइल विवरण ठीक से नहीं दिखाए गए थे। उदाहरण के लिए छवि विवरण और लाइसेंस जानकारी गायब थी। अब यह सुधर गया है। [1][2]

भावी परिवर्तन

  • विकिपीडिया पर सामग्री अनुवाद उपकरण मशीन अनुवाद का उपयोग कर सकते हैं। ऐसे अनुवादों को रोकने के लिए एक प्रणाली है जहाँ संपादक मशीन अनुवाद की गलतियों को ठीक नहीं करते हैं। यह चेतावनी देता है या उन्हें रोक देता है अगर वे सिर्फ मशीन अनुवाद उन्हें कॉपी करते हैं। यदि यह प्रणाली बहुत सख्त है या पर्याप्त सख्त नहीं है तो आप भाषा टीम को बताएं। [5]

Talk pages consultation Phase 2 update संपादित करें

The Phase 2 of the talk pages consultation has begun. Several communities have already signed-up. This email is sent to every Phase 1 coordinator to provide you some updates.

If you prefer not to participate to the phase 2 as a coordinator, no worries: you can ignore that message, and you will not receive any message from us for the phase 2. In the future, we will only send messages to people who've listed their names on the phase 2 page. You've been very helpful for the phase 1 and we still thank you for your help. Can you forward this message to other people who may help?

Create a group or have it ready

Some groups are ready, some other are still under construction and we still miss some languages or wikis. We invite you to sign-up your community page for the phase 2.

We have two tables: one for under construction pages, the other one for ready-to-go pages. Under construction pages should be listed: we can help you to built it if needed. Those pages have to list the questions we have and should provide a link to the Phase 1 report.

Pages that are ready to be used have to be moved to the "Confirmed participant groups" section to that we can add them to the banner.

Banner and advertizing

When a community page is ready, we will help you to have it known. We are going to display a banner with link to the consultation on your wiki. We need some help to translate that banner (it is very short). We will not display a banner without translation to your community.

Don't forget to add a link to the consultation to any page on your wiki where people can see the information. You can also invite other wikis in your language to participate to one global page (like for Russian language).

Don't forget to post the information about Phase 2 on social medias related to your wiki(s), and ping people who participated to the phase 1.

Changes later this week

  •   Big changes to the replica database will happen on 3 June. Some tools on Cloud Services will stop working if the maintainers do not update them to use the new schema. This probably affects tools that query for revisions or log entries made by a user. [7][8]
  •   The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 28 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 29 May. It will be on all wikis from 30 May (calendar).

  •     You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 29 May at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.

हाल में हुए परिवर्तन

  • जब आप विकि पर किसी पृष्ठ से एक पीडीएफ बनाते हैं तो यह अब प्रोटॉन द्वारा किया जाता है। इससे पहले हम इलेक्ट्रॉन का उपयोग करते थे। इसे वैसा ही दिखना चाहिए लेकिन बेहतर काम करना चाहिए। दोनों क्रोमियम का उपयोग करते हैं। यह प्रणाली जब आप कई लेखों को एक किताब में इकट्ठा करते हैं और उनसे पीडीएफ बनाते हैं उससे अलग है। [9][10]

समस्याएँ

  • आप 19 जून को ०५:०० (यू॰सी॰टी॰) पर ३० मिनट के लिए विकिमीडिया कॉमन्स को संपादित करने में सक्षम नहीं होंगे। यह एक हार्डवेयर समस्या को ठीक करने के लिए है। [14]

Over the past six months, a big consultation was hosted on various wikis about talk pages. You have helped us to host those conversations on your wiki, and we want to thank you about your help. Without your assistance, it would not have been possible to achieve it.

We are happy to inform you that the the Phase 2 report is now published. Like every community member, you are more than welcomed to write your thoughts about this report on the talk page, and watchlist the project page.

The publication is an important step: now we have a direction and the Editing team is going to work on the talk pages project. The next steps will be presented at Wikimania, on Saturday August 17, at 14:00 UTC. The session will be livrstreamed and recorded.

  • There will be no Tech News issue next week. The next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 2 September 2019.

Problems

  •   Some abuse filters stopped working because of a code change. Only variables for the current action will work. Variables defined inside a branch may not work outside of that branch. You can read more to see how to fix the filters.
  • Only six accounts can be created from one IP address per day. Between 12 August and August 15 this was two accounts per day. This was because of a security issue. It is now six accounts per day again. [44]

  • Only a limited number of accounts can be created from one IP address. An IP address can be whitelisted so that it can create as many accounts as needed. This is useful at events where many new persons learn to edit. IP addresses that are whitelisted for this reason will also not show CAPTCHAs when you create accounts. This will happen on Wednesday.   •   The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 20 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 21 August. It will be on all wikis from 22 August (calendar).

  • Article writing contest - A 3-month article writing contest will be conducted for Indian Wikimedians communities. Following community feedback, we noted some community members wanted the process of article list generation to be improved. In this iteration, there will be at least two lists of articles

  2. Community suggested list. Google generated list will be given to the community members before finalising the final list. On the other hand, the community may create a list by discussing among the community over Village pump, Mailing list and similar discussion channels.

  • The advanced version of the edit review pages (Recent Changes, Watchlist, and Related Changes) now include two new filters. These filters are for "All contents" and "All discussions".   • There is a new technical community newsletter. You can read more about the work of Wikimedia's technical community. Subscribe to get the information in the future.
  •   Outreachy is an internship program for groups who are underrepresented in free and open-source software. There are seven Wikimedia projects about coding, documentation and quality assurance in the next round. Persons who fit the criteria can apply. The last day to apply is 5 November.

Recent changes

  •   The API sandbox and help pages now show more clearly when API modules are marked as internal. API modules marked as internal were probably internal before. It was easier to miss. You should look for non-internal alternatives. [65]

Problems

  • There is a translation tool we use on wikis with more than one language. For a few days it did not create pages for new languages when someone translated a page. The languages did not show in the language bar. This has been fixed. [66]
  • The history and diffs can show wrong content. This is because of a cache problem. It will soon be fixed. [67]

Changes later this week

  •   The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 22 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 23 October. It will be on all wikis from 24 October (calendar).
  • Reference Previews will be a beta feature on all Wikipedias and some Wikivoyages. It shows you a preview of the footnote when you hover over or click on the number. It has been a beta feature on German and Arabic Wikipedia since April.

  •     You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 23 October. See how to join.

Recent changes

  • You can post proposals for the Community Wishlist Survey. The survey decides what the Community Tech team will work on. You can post proposals until 11 November. You can vote on proposals from 20 November to 2 December. This year the wishlist will focus on Wikibooks, Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikisource, Wikiversity, Wikispecies, Wikivoyage and Wikinews. You can read more about the format for this year.
  • Mobile users now have a specific design for their Watchlist. [68][69]
  • You can share feedback and ideas on the Desktop Improvements project. The goal is to make the interface easier to use for readers and editors without removing any functionality. The Foundation's Readers Web team will work on this over the next two years.
  •   OOUI now allows using px (pixels) instead of em (em) for some specific cases. [70][71]

Changes later this week

  •   The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 29 अक्टूबर. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 30 अक्टूबर. It will be on all wikis from 31 अक्टूबर (calendar).

  • There will be no software changes from 19 December to 2 January. The first MediaWiki version next year will come the week of 6 January. [72]
  •   Gadgets and user scripts can access variables about the current page in JavaScript. In 2015, this information was moved from global variables named wg* to mw.config. The old global variables will be removed later this year. You can know more about it and tell the developers if you want to try this out on your wiki first.

Recent changes

  • At Special:Contributions you could see up to 5000 edits at the same time if you edited the URL. This has been lowered to 500. This is to stop requests which break the sites. [73]

Changes later this week

  • MediaWiki:ipb-default-expiry can set the default length to block a user for your wiki. You will be able to use MediaWiki:ipb-default-expiry-ip to set a different default block length for IP editors. [74]
  •   The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 5 November. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 6 November. It will be on all wikis from 7 November (calendar).

  • MediaWiki2LaTeX can put different pages from a Wikimedia wiki into a PDF. It can now make a PDF with around 5000 pages. Previously this was 800 pages.
